Mount Olympus-June 1974

Rob and Carol are the only two I remember names for on this trip. There were six of us and we started at the Hoh Ranger Station. We trekked 17 miles the first day and camped on Blue Glacier. The next day we climbed Mt. Olympus and then broke camp and headed back out. It was one of the most challenging trips I had been on. Wonderful time.

We stop for a rest in the Hoh Forest in order to get out of the rain and get the heavy packs off our backs.

We start to climb up and out of the Hoh Forest.

It is 17.5 miles to our first sighting of the Blue Glacier.

Once on Blue Glacier we can see our destination at the end of the 2.6 mile-long glacier.

We rest on Blue Glacier.

The two doctors were outstanding backpackers.

I remember seeing water running on top of the glacier and then disappearing down deep, cold chutes in the ice.

Camping on Blue Glacier.

We put everything we have under our sleeping bags, even coiling the ropes to help insulate us from the ice.

Early the next day we rope up into two teams and head for the summit.

The rock climb to the summit is only about 80' and easy.

Carol and unknown pull out their food on the summit of Mt. Olympus

We start the long haul back to the Hoh Valley trail.

Someone glissades on one of the many slopes that we climbed up earlier.

Back at camp we begin preparing for the hike out.

One of the doctors was doing research research on pulmonary edema and had us measure our heart beats as we hiked out. We varied our pace and measured our heart eats each time and he recorded the stats. Blisters began to appear.

Finally, we make it to Happy Hoh bridge. We had only 13.5 miles to go.
For the hike through the Hoh Valley I switched to infrared film, hence, the red coloring.

The ranger station is nine miles from the trailhead. We have about three and a half hours to go.

I think this is Happy Four campsite. We rested and munched here.

The last mile is always the longest.

I believe we hiked 37 miles roundtrip.
