Kem and I set out for Goat Peak which is north of Mt. Baker. We did very little research on the route. From our view, it was a straight forward route to the top. After driving FR 3065 to Twin Lakes parking area, we swung across the valley on the west side of the peak catching a bench which provided good hiking terrain. We then found a route up to an arm on the north side of Goat Peak. Then it was a matter of climbing to the summit. We had a bite to eat on top and the weather moved in on us. We found ourselves in a cloud bank. We hurried off the summit and after about ten minutes we realized we had gone down in the wrong direction. It was somewhat scary due to the conditions and our lack of gear. We finally lowered ourselves enough to get below the cloud. Then we were able to find a decent route back to our car. The mistake cost us dearly in energy and time.
A very easy climb from the arm to the top of Goat Peak.
Me on top of Goat Peak West thinking this is the direction down.
Kem on Goat Peak West thinking this is the way down.
On the wrong side of the peak Kem was wondering what we did wrong.
Kem giving the situation some serious thought.
I lost control of my glissade and had to self-arrest on some icy snow.
